the Digital Monument to the Jewish Community

Recently commissioned, this translation was an extremely labour intensive piece of work. Comprising biographies relating to thousands of Jewish families in the Netherlands who were affected by the second world war, the data is both historically important and very detailed.

As well as biographical information, the documentation included lists of household contents found after the war. Each item required careful translating from the Dutch original and this was especially difficult, as the descriptions of many commonplace items have changed significantly over time. In addition to the linguistic work involved, the translation therefore required substantial background research to ensure accuracy.
